Phlebitis – definition
In phlebitis, the vascular wall of a superficial vein – usually in the arms and legs – becomes inflamed. If the phlebitis is located in a varicose vein, the expert refers to it as varicophlebitis.
Thrombophlebitis arises when the inflammation forms in an intact vein, that is, a blood clot forms. Therefore, if you have phlebitis, you should not hesitate for long and consult a doctor. Phlebitis can last from a few days to several weeks.
Causes of phlebitis
Venous inflammation can have various causes. The most common causes are:
- Phlebitis as a result of varicose veins: Blood flows more slowly in varicose veins, which promotes phlebitis.
- Phlebitis as a result of an injured vessel wall: Another cause of phlebitis is an injury to the vessel wall caused by blood sampling, infusions, or insertion of a venous catheter.
- Phlebitis with increased risk of thrombosis: The risk of thrombosis is increased especially during pregnancy as well as in the puerperium and after operations. This also increases the risk of phlebitis.
- Phlebitis as a concomitant symptom: Bacterial phlebitis can develop as a result of invading bacteria.
Symptoms of phlebitis (inflammation of the veins)
Venous inflammation is usually localized, but can rapidly expand and lead to deep vein thrombosis. Typical symptoms of phlebitis in the affected area are:
- Redness and warm feeling of the skin
- Pain – especially with muscle tension and touch
- Hardening of the vein
- Swelling in the vein section
In case of bacterial inflammation, fever may also develop.
Where can phlebitis occur?
Phlebitis is often a consequence of varicose veins and these are usually located on the legs, such as in the calf area. So, phlebitis usually occurs there as well. More rarely, the vessels of the head or arms are affected.
Phlebitis – Diagnosis
In a detailed consultation, we will clarify your risk factors with you: Do you already suffer from varicose veins, or do phlebitis and thrombosis occur frequently in your family?
During a subsequent physical examination, the doctor palpates the extremities to detect superficial inflammation. Ultrasound is used to determine the extent. We can also check whether the deep veins are also affected.

Phlebitis – therapy and treatment at your vein doctor in Feldmeilen
Depending on the type and severity of phlebitis, there are different treatment options. Part of the cost of treatment may be covered by health insurance, which is rarely the case for the cost of spider vein removal, for example. By the way, in the case of varicose veins, the costs are usually completely financed.
Medical compression stockings
Wearing compression stockings is basic therapy. They support blood flow and thus promote rapid healing of the inflamed vein. Additional movement also favors blood circulation. This combination ensures that the vein diameter is reduced – so the blood can flow better toward the heart.
Cooling and anti-inflammatory drugs
For the blood to be transported back to the heart more quickly, you should cool the inflamed area. However, medications such as anti-inflammatory ointments or tablets can also be used as a therapeutic measure.
Stitch incision
If a clot has formed in a superficial vein, we can remove it by massaging it out through a stab incision.
Prevent phlebitis
To effectively prevent phlebitis, various tips and tricks are suitable:
- Get your varicose veins treated.
- Wear compression stockings if you have varicose veins.
- Avoid standing and sitting for long periods.
- Exercise: Walking, swimming or vein gymnastics get the vein pump going.
- Avoid sauna sessions and hot baths: They inhibit blood circulation and blood vessels dilate.
